Universal Basic Income (UBI) has been hotly debated in the last few years as an option to help millions of Canadians out of poverty amidst rising costs of living. 

 

With the cost of living at an all-time high, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to afford necessities in cities all across the country.

 

Talia Bernstein, a researcher for Daily Bread said people are having to make tough decisions about where they spend their money.

 

“There just aren’t enough options for people earning low-income wages, even with help it’s not always enough,” she said.

According to Canada’s food price report for 2023, food prices are set to increase by up to seven per cent across the country in the upcoming year.

This comes after three consecutive years of gradual price increases which have left students wondering how they can afford tuition as well as a warm meal.

Humber College’s student union, IGNITE, has been partnering with the University of Guelph-Humber’s student news organization GH360 since 2020 to try and provide relief to students who are dealing with food insecurity.

The Ontario New Democrats (ONDP) announced and celebrated the official election of Marit Stiles as its new leader on Feb. 4 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in downtown Toronto.

Stiles ran uncontested in the race to become the new leader of the party, which remains the official opposition at Queen’s Park.

Mike Schreiner announced on Tuesday after a brief flirtation with the Ontario Liberals that he has decided to stay on as the leader of the Ontario Green Party.

The announcement came after 40 members from the Ontario Liberal Party inviting him in a public letter sent on Jan. 29 to run for their party’s leadership. The Liberals currently have eight seats in the legislature.

The Humber women’s basketball team cruised to victory on Wednesday, beating the Augustana Vikings 84 to 63 during the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association’s quarter final game in Hamilton on March 15.

The Hawks went into this tournament as the reigning Ontario College Athletics Association champions. The University of Alberta – Augustana team, from Camrose, Alta., are that province’s second place finishers
